Probate Applications – Delays Persist

According to recent data from HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS), there is still a delay in the processing of probate applications despite a small reduction in the wait time for paper applications.

According to the data, the average period from submission to grant for the 26,637 grants of probate matters in March 2023 was 10.8 weeks, up from 10.6 weeks in February 2023.

Even so, this is a decrease from the 11 weeks noted in January. The data continues to be higher above the 9.2 week average for the previous 12 months.

21,232 of the 26,637 awards that were given were digital. The average wait time for non-stopped applications was 5.1 weeks, up from 4.2 weeks in February 2023.

Delays for digital applications that were abandoned remained at 17.7 weeks on average in March, down from 17.8 weeks in February and 18.6 weeks in January.  These are all above the 15.6-week average for the previous 12 months.

Further on this, the number of weeks that delays in paper applications that are not stopped currently stand at 16.4 compared to 17.4 in February. It still exceeds the 7.8 week wait from March of last year, though.

The average wait time for applications that are not blocked has decreased from February’s (30.6 weeks) high but has increased significantly from March 2022’s 22.5 week wait time.
