Confirming Statutory Legacy Figure Increase

The Lord Chancellor has increased the Statutory Legacy figure. This comes into force on the 6th February 2020. That means spouses or civil partners with children will be able to inherit £270,000 from the intestate estates, rather than £250,000 which was the statutory legacy figure set in October 2014.

As a new figure was overdue prior to the election in December 2019, industry heavy weights such as The Law Society contacted the Lord Chancellor’s office, to ask when the new figure would be put into place.

This figure is relevant in intestacy cases. This increase is very welcomed, but many people are unaware that under intestacy laws, unmarried partners and close friends cannot inherit, one should always have a will written.
